Navigating the User Guide
You should be able to approach the User Guide as if you are reading a book, building on concepts as you read through it from top-to-bottom, left-to-right. However, you may also use it as a resource to tap into from time-to-time as you work with a feature, meaning that it is not critical for you to read through the contents in sequential order. Each topic was designed to stand alone.

Here are just a few icons we use to indicate, or mark, different types of information within the User Guide:

![]() |
Indicates an alert for critical information that may help you accomplish a task or prevent you from encountering a trouble spot. |
Links
All hyperlinks are blue and most take you to other topics within the User Guide. There are a few links that require you to have an Internet connection—most notably links to microsoft.com.
User Guide viewer
The User Guide viewer appears in a browser window. Within this window is a topic pane with 3 tabs: Contents, Index, and Search.
- Contents The Contents page for the User Guide is designed to be the table of contents or site map so that you can quickly go to a topic area. When you click the Contents tab or the Home link in the breadcrumb navigation, you will be taken to this table of contents page. Not all topics are exposed through the Contents page, but you can navigate to more detailed tables of contents from there.
- Index The Index page is a single topic with a series of hyperlinks. Simply click a letter of the word, feature, or item you are looking for, and then click a topic link from the list of topics for that letter.
- Search The Search page consists of a single
search box that follows a simple rule: search will return only topics that
match what you have typed into the search box. A basic search consists of
the word or phrase you want to find and generally follow these rules:
- Searches are not case-sensitive, so you can type your search in uppercase or lowercase characters.
- You may search for any combination of letters (a-z) and numbers (0-9).
- Punctuation marks such as the period, colon, semicolon, comma, and hyphen are ignored during a search.
- You may add modifiers such as "and," "or," and "not" between each word in the search field. If you don't use these modifiers, "or" is assumed between each word.
